About Tinnitus

Tinnitus, or “ringing in the ears”, is the perception of sound within the human ear when no actual sound is present. Tinnitus is not a disease, but a condition that can result from a wide range of underlying causes. Tinnitus sounds may be heard as high pitched ringing, insect – like, buzzing, crashing waves, ticking and etc.

Effects of tinnitus on sufferer:

  • Reduced concentration
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Depression
  • Anxiety

Managing Tinnitus

Most people with tinnitus are also affected by hearing impairment. In fact, tinnitus and hearing loss are quite closely correlated. Although tinnitus has no cure medically such as specific medications or surgery, research has shown that relief is possible with the following:

  • Hearing aids (for tinnitus patients with hearing loss and/or hyperacusis)

  • Sound enrichment

  • Tinnitus masking

  • Tinnitus retraining therapy

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
