Newborn Hearing Screening: A Sound Start to Life
Hearing is the gateway to your child’s speech, learning, and overall development. At Eartistic, we understand that every sound — your voice, a lullaby, a giggle—builds connections and memories that shape your baby’s world. That’s why we prioritize Newborn Hearing Screening — a quick, safe, and essential test to ensure your little one’s hearing is as perfect as it should be.
Why Newborn Hearing Screening is Important
Hearing loss is not always obvious at birth. In fact, 50% of babies born with hearing impairment have no family history of hearing loss. Early detection and intervention are critical for ensuring your baby develops normal speech, language, and cognitive abilities.
Malaysia introduced the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening program in 2003, and it has since helped thousands of families identify hearing issues early, paving the way for timely intervention and treatment.
What is Newborn Hearing Screening?
Newborn hearing screening is a quick and painless test performed in the first few days or weeks after birth. It helps identify babies who may have hearing loss so further testing and support can begin immediately. Both methods are safe, reliable, and take only a few minutes while your baby sleeps or rests quietly.
Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR
- AABR measures how the hearing nerve and brain respond to sound.
- Soft earphones play clicks or tones into the baby’s ears.
- Sensors placed on the baby’s head measure the response.
- AABR is often performed in specialized clinics or for babies at higher risk of hearing loss.
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE)
- In a normal hospital setting, the OAE test is most commonly performed.
- A small probe is placed in the baby’s ear to measure sound waves produced by the cochlea (inner ear).
- If the cochlea is functioning normally, it produces echoes in response to sound.
What Happens if My Baby Does Not Pass the Screening?
If your baby does not pass the initial hearing screening, it doesn’t necessarily mean they have hearing loss. Sometimes, factors like fluid in the ear or movement during the test can affect results. A follow-up diagnostic test will be conducted to confirm your baby’s hearing status.
At Eartistic, we provide:
- Comprehensive diagnostic assessments using advanced tools like ABR and OAE.
- Aided hearing assessments for babies who may require hearing aids or cochlear implants.
- Personalized counseling to guide parents through every step of the journey.
The Benefits of Early Detection
Early identification of hearing loss allows your child to receive the support they need to thrive:
- Speech and Language Development: Early intervention ensures children develop strong communication skills.
- Cognitive and Social Growth: Hearing connects your child to family, friends, and the world around them.
- Peace of Mind for Parents: Knowing your baby’s hearing health early helps you make informed decisions.
